Review…

I inhaled The Mountains Wild over the weekend and I’m thrilled that this is the first in a new series! Set primarily in Ireland, this atmospheric mystery is unputdownable. The story is told in dual timelines between the disappearance in 1993 and the present day in 2016. There are fantastic characters and I loved the resurfacing of them from the past to the present.

Dublin, Ireland

I’m always drawn to books with a strong setting and you certainly find that here. The story is mostly set in Dublin and the Wicklow Mountains and it was great to be transported there even if just through the pages of a book. Ireland is one of my favorite places to visit and I was mostly recently there for a trip to Dublin in December. Taylor makes the streets of Dublin come alive in this book.

4.5. stars – I really liked it and will certainly be diving into this author’s backlist! The Mountains Wild is atmospheric, moody, and all the things you want in a mystery. It’s twisty and turny without going too dark and it kept me guessing until the end!  I think this book is best binged as there are many suspects, witnesses, etc. mentioned and it could be tough to keep track if read over a long period. I included a note to more sensitive readers and a trigger warning at the end of this post.

Summary from the publisher…

The Mountains Wild

Twenty-three years ago, Maggie D’arcy’s family received a call from the Dublin police. Her cousin Erin has been missing for several days. Maggie herself spent weeks in Ireland, trying to track Erin’s movements, working beside the police. But it was to no avail: no trace of her was ever found.

The experience inspired Maggie to become a cop. Now, back on Long Island, more than 20 years have passed. Maggie is a detective and a divorced mother of a teenager. When the Garda call to say that Erin’s scarf has been found and another young woman has gone missing, Maggie returns to Ireland, awakening all the complicated feelings from the first trip. The despair and frustration of not knowing what happened to Erin. Her attraction to Erin’s coworker, now a professor, who never fully explained their relationship. And her determination to solve the case, once and for all.

Trigger Warnings outside of the obvious ones from the description: rape (not descriptive). I’m definitely a very sensitive reader and this was not outside of what is comfortable for me to read. There are some upsetting references, but nothing gratuitous or overly detailed. Swearing isn’t something that really bothers me in books, unless it’s overkill, but if that’s not your thing, just a heads up that there is some in this book.
