The Bookish Life of Nina Hill Review

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman.

Nina Hill has her life all planned out… quite literally. If it’s not in her planner, it’s not happening. Her days consist of working at a bookstore, trivia nights with her friends and scheduled (and non-negotiable) reading time. I’m in agreement with Nina that these are all great things! Suddenly though, her perfectly planned life is shaken up by something very unplanned. The father she never knew has passed away and left her with something she never expected- a large extended family. This is introverted Nina’s worst nightmare!

This is a really cute read with a storyline that I was drawn to. I enjoyed it and can see it being very beloved amongst the bookish community. However, it probably won’t be among my 2019 favorites. Here’s what worked and didn’t work for me…

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill

What worked- this is a book for book lovers! I can totally relate with Nina on so many things- I don’t do well with change, I’m an outgoing introvert, I am always up for trivia and of course… I love books. Nina also struggles with anxiety, which is something I can relate to. I also liked that Nina is multifaceted and not your typical bookish character.

What didn’t work- something about this book didn’t feel totally consistent and cohesive. It jumps around a bit and feels slightly scattered at times. The writing is almost overly witty- every sentence seemed to have some sort of one liner or joke in it, which isn’t something I tend to love.

In the end I’m glad I read this and, although I didn’t love it, I did like it and think many others will adore it.

Thank you so much to Berkley Publishing for this review copy. All opinions are my own. The Bookish Life of Nina Hill comes out on July 9th.
