This book is YA fantasy and outside of what I normally read. I’d likely not have tried the series if it wasn’t raved about by people whose opinions I really value. I was intrigued by how many friends and reviewers love these books, but don’t typically read fantasy. I panic bought this the week my bookstore was closing due to COVID (as if I don’t have enough books at home) and I’m so glad I did!
Harper is one of the most likable, relatable and badass heroines. I appreciate that, although this is a retelling, it is also it’s own unique story- there are no roses or magical mirrors involved!

I did have some slight issues with the book, but that has to do with the actual idea behind Beauty & the Beast (call me old fashioned, but kidnapping women isn’t actually that romantic to me) and way less to do with the actual writing. The story was a bit darker than I thought it’d be and I had to skim some more violent descriptions (they aren’t that bad, I’m just very sensitive). I ordered the sequel when I only had a couple chapters left… so clearly this was a big win for me.

For fans of dark-ish fantasy, The Vampire Diaries (yup, I’m admitting I was a big TVD fan) and maybe The Hunger Games? There’s a certain Katniss, Peeta, Gale vibe going on.
Since writing the above review, I read book two, A Heart So Fierce and Broken and I binged it as quickly as I did with A Curse! Now I am anxiously awaiting the publication of book three- A Vow So Bold and Deadly (pub date January 3 2021).
