Diana: Her True Story In Her Own Words

Diana: Her True Story In Her Own Words by Andrew Morton Book Review.

Summary:

In the early 1990s Princess Diana wanted a chance to tell her own story and she set about secretly doing so. Andrew Morton “interviewed” Diana by having a mutual friend, James Colthurst, sneak questions and a tape recorder in with him to Kensington Palace. Colthurst would record Diana’s answers and return them back to Morton. Along with the recordings, Diana also gave her friends and family permission to speak openly with Morton. The resulting book was a groundbreaking biography and a huge bombshell for the Palace to deal with.

Review:

Diana In Her Own Words

This is the 25th anniversary edition and has been edited quite a bit over the decades to bring current. It was hard to know what exactly was included in the original printing and what’s been added. I did greatly appreciate the section at the beginning that contains direct transcripts from Diana’s recordings.

I have a really hard time reviewing this book. It took me many months to read – it’s heavy in both size and in content. I knew Diana’s story would be heartbreaking, but even with as much as I knew before, there was so much I didn’t know. Her story is a hard one to read and even more heartbreaking in knowing her life was cut way too short. Especially when she was finally finding some freedom and happiness. I’m glad I read it, because it gave me some interesting insight into Diana’s life and into the modern British Royal Family. I would recommend it for the more hardcore fans, probably not as much for those with a causal interest.
