The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley

The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley – Book Review.

Nicola was born with the gift of psychometry – she can touch an object and see a glimpse into its past. She was raised to hide and suppress her gift. When a woman arrives with a carving of a wooden bird at the gallery where Nicola works, she knows now is the time to use her gift, if only to help this woman. With the help of Rob, who shares her talent, she follows a young girl, Anna, into the past in the search for the truth behind the Firebird.

I read the description for The Firebird many times and was not hooked. However, I knew this was the follow-up to my favorite of Kearsley’s books, The Winter Sea. That was enough to convince me. I ended up loving this book as much as it’s predecessor!

The Firebird follows dual timelines that wonderfully intertwine across multiple countries. Nicola is a very likable and complex character and Rob is pretty dreamy! I also enjoyed the characters in the past timelines equally. The history drives the story, but the romances are a wonderful extra!

Although the book can technically be read as a stand alone, you will get much more out of it to read The Winter Sea first. I wish I hadn’t let two years pass between these as I forgot many details from the first book. The character of Rob is first introduced to us as a child in The Shadowy Horses, but I don’t think it’s necessary to read that book first.

Summary from publisher:

The Firebird Susanna Kearsley

Nicola Marter was born with a gift. When she touches an object, she sometimes glimpses those who have owned it before. When a woman arrives with a small wooden carving at the gallery Nicola works at, she can see the object’s history and knows that it was named after the Firebird—the mythical creature from an old Russian fable.

Compelled to know more, Nicola follows a young girl named Anna into the past who leads her on a quest through the glittering backdrops of the Jacobites and Russian courts, unearthing a tale of love, courage, and redemption.
